The advantages of a local search in your overall digital  strategy to be seen and found in the critical Golden Triangle of a SERP, just when users are looking for your service, product or location.  Local Search is linked to Google  maps which makes it more critical for mobile users who are in transit and may not be familiar in the area where they find themselves.
